1. Our approach
Preppo exists to help students learn, understand and become more confident thinkers.
Artificial intelligence can be a powerful learning tool when it helps a student understand a difficult concept, practise a skill or work through a problem.
It becomes less helpful when it simply does the student's work for them.
That's why we follow a simple principle:
Preppo helps you learn. It shouldn't replace your learning.
This Academic Integrity Policy explains how students should use Preppo responsibly.
2. What is academic integrity?
Academic integrity means being honest about your learning and the work you produce.
In practice, this means:
- doing your own thinking
- making a genuine attempt at your work
- acknowledging help when required
- following your school's rules
- not pretending someone else's work is your own
- and using AI in ways that support rather than replace learning.
Using AI is not automatically cheating.
Whether AI can be used for a particular task depends on the circumstances and the rules set by the student's school, tutor, teacher or assessment body.
3. How Preppo is designed to help
Preppo is designed as an AI study buddy and learning coach, rather than simply an answer generator.
Preppo may help students by:
- explaining difficult concepts
- breaking problems into smaller steps
- providing hints
- asking guiding questions
- helping students understand mistakes
- creating practice questions
- giving feedback on a student's attempt
- helping students revise
- explaining unfamiliar terminology
- providing examples
- helping students prepare for tests and exams
- And adapting explanations to a student's year level and learning needs.
Where appropriate, Preppo may ask a student to attempt a problem before providing further assistance.
4. Why Preppo doesn't always give the answer
Sometimes the fastest way to answer a question isn't the best way to learn it.
If a student asks Preppo:
“What's the answer to this maths question?”
Preppo may instead help the student identify the first step, provide a hint or ask them to explain what they already know.
This isn't Preppo refusing to help.
It is Preppo helping the student learn how to solve the problem themselves.
We may use approaches such as guided questions, hints and step-by-step scaffolding where we believe they will better support learning.
5. Good ways to use Preppo
Students are encouraged to use Preppo to support genuine learning.
Appropriate uses may include:
Understanding
“I don't understand photosynthesis. Can you explain it for Year 7?”
Getting unstuck
“I'm stuck on this equation. Can you give me a hint without giving me the answer?”
Checking your thinking
“Here's how I solved this problem. Did I make a mistake?”
Practising
“Give me five practice questions about fractions.”
Learning from mistakes
“I got this question wrong. Can you explain where I went wrong?”
Revision
“Quiz me on the causes of World War I.”
Improving your work
“Can you explain what my teacher means by ‘analyse rather than describe’?”
Preparing for an assessment
“Help me make a revision plan for my science test next week.”
These uses involve AI supporting the student's learning rather than replacing it.
6. Uses that may not be appropriate
Students should not use Preppo to avoid doing work they are expected to complete themselves.
Examples include asking Preppo to:
- complete an assessment on the student's behalf
- provide answers during a closed-book test or examination
- write an entire assignment that the student then submits as their own
- impersonate the student's writing or work
- fabricate research, sources, quotations or results
- rewrite AI-generated work specifically to conceal the use of AI
- circumvent plagiarism or AI-detection systems
- help the student falsely claim that AI-generated work was created independentlyor bypass rules established by a school, teacher or assessment authority.
Preppo may refuse, redirect or provide a different form of assistance where a request appears intended to facilitate academic dishonesty.
7. School rules come first
Different schools, tutors, teachers and assessment authorities have different rules about artificial intelligence.
One teacher may encourage students to use AI for brainstorming or feedback. Another may require an assignment to be completed without AI assistance.
Students are responsible for understanding and following the rules that apply to their work.
If a student isn't sure whether AI is allowed, they should ask their teacher.
A useful question is:
“Are we allowed to use AI for this task, and if so, how should we acknowledge it?”
Preppo does not override the academic-integrity rules of a student's school or assessment authority.
8. Homework
Homework can have different purposes.
Sometimes homework is designed to practise something already taught. Sometimes it helps a teacher understand what a student can do independently.
Preppo can help students with homework, but students should still make a genuine attempt to understand and complete the work themselves.
Instead of:
“Do my homework.”
try:
“Help me understand how to start question 3.”
Instead of:
“Write this answer for me.”
try:
“Here's my answer. Can you help me make my reasoning clearer?”
The goal should be to finish the homework understanding more than when you started.
9. Assignments and essays
Preppo can be useful during the learning process around an assignment.
Subject to school rules, this might include:
- explaining the assignment question
- helping identify concepts that need further research
- explaining difficult source material
- asking questions that help a student develop their argument
- providing feedback on structure
- explaining grammar
- identifying areas that are unclear
- Or helping a student understand teacher feedback.
Students should not submit substantial AI-generated work as their own where this is prohibited or where the assessment is intended to demonstrate the student's independent work.
Where a school requires students to disclose or cite AI assistance, students should do so.
10. Tests and examinations
Students must not use Preppo during an examination, test or other assessment where outside assistance or AI is prohibited.
Preppo can, however, be used before an assessment to help students prepare.
For example, students can ask Preppo to:
- create practice questions
- run a practice quiz
- explain topics they find difficult
- identify areas for revision
- practise similar problems
- Or help create a study plan.
We want Preppo to help students prepare for the test, not take the test for them.
11. AI can be wrong
Academic integrity also means thinking critically about information.
Preppo uses artificial intelligence, and AI can make mistakes.
It may occasionally produce information that is inaccurate, incomplete, outdated or misleading. It may also generate a source, quotation or factual claim incorrectly.
Students should not assume something is true simply because an AI said it.
For important schoolwork, students should:
- check facts against reliable sources
- read original sources where appropriate
- verify quotations and references
- use sources required or recommended by their teacher
- and ask a teacher when uncertain.
Using AI responsibly includes questioning AI.
12. Sources and references
Students should never knowingly submit fabricated sources, quotations or references.
If Preppo suggests a source, students should verify that:
- the source actually exists
- the author and title are correct
- the source says what Preppo claims it says
- and the source is appropriate for the assignment.
Where a student uses ideas or material from another source, they should acknowledge that source according to their school's referencing requirements.
13. Acknowledging AI use
Schools may require students to disclose when and how they used artificial intelligence.
Where required, students should honestly explain their use of Preppo.
For example:
“I used Preppo to help me understand simultaneous equations and generate additional practice questions.”
or:
“I used Preppo to provide feedback on the structure of my draft. The final response is my own work.”
Students should follow their school's preferred wording or citation format where one is provided.
14. Parents and Guardians
Parents and carers play an important role in helping children develop healthy habits around AI.
We encourage parents to talk with students about:
- when AI is useful
- when independent work matters
- their school's AI rules
- checking information generated by AI
- being honest about AI assistance
- And using AI to develop skills rather than avoid difficult work.
A useful question isn't simply:
“Did you use AI?”
A better question can be:
“What did you understand better after using it?”
15. How Preppo may respond to inappropriate requests
Preppo may detect requests that appear inconsistent with responsible learning.
Depending on the situation, Preppo may:
- ask the student to attempt the question first
- provide a hint rather than an answer
- explain the underlying concept
- provide a similar practice question
- ask whether AI is permitted for the assessment
- encourage the student to check their school's rules
- refuse to assist with cheating or deception
- or redirect the conversation towards legitimate learning support.
These safeguards may not identify every situation correctly.
Students remain responsible for using Preppo appropriately and complying with their school's requirements.
16. What Preppo will not help students do
Preppo is not intended to help students:
Cheat. We want students to demonstrate what they genuinely know.
Deceive tutors or teachers. We will not intentionally help disguise prohibited AI-generated work as independently created student work.
Avoid learning. Difficulty is sometimes part of learning. Preppo should help students work through it rather than simply remove it.
Fabricate evidence. Students should not invent sources, quotations, data or research.
Break assessment rules. School and assessment requirements apply regardless of what an AI system is technically capable of doing.
17. Our commitment
We believe the best educational AI doesn't make thinking unnecessary.
It makes better thinking possible.
As Preppo develops, we aim to design features around these principles:
Guidance over shortcuts.
Understanding over answer generation.
Practice over dependency.
Honesty over concealment.
Critical thinking over blind trust in AI.
Students doing the learning, with AI there to help.
